Being a small organisation ensures that all projects are in the hands of the Principal (John van Laun MSc PhD FSA MIFA). Where necessary some work is outsourced to well-proven colleagues in specialist fields: this ensures that all works are carried out to the Bye Laws and Code of Conduct of the Institute of Field Archaeologist of which John van Laun Associates is a Recognised Organisation.

All aspects of consultancy are offered – requirements under planning applications, recording and survey, interpretation (including artistic reconstructions) and funding.

John van Laun is highly respected within the field of industrial archaeology. He has published widely (books and articles) on topics ranging from 17th century ironmaking, the pre-history of the modern railway to the Wye Tour of Joseph Farington (Yale 1998). He was the founding secretary of the Railway & Canal Historical Society Tramroad Group and past Secretary of the Picturesque Society. Dr John van Laun has run long-term Extra-Mural Classes for a number of Universities and is a Fellow of the Society of Antiquaries and a Member of the Institute of Field Archaeologists.

Michael Blackmore has worked with John van Laun as an illustrator for over 35 years and produced most of the drawings reproduced here. He trained as a lithographer (on stone!) and his work grace many books and publications. He is regarded as one of the finest living illustrators of historic industrial sites.

Although regionally based in South Wales, John van Laun Associates have undertaken work as far a field as Scotland and they maintain a catholic interest in all geographical and subject areas. For instance, John van Laun is a Fellow of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers (FNEIMME Royal Charter 1876).
